With an aspirational government target of £1 trillion of exports by 2020, the drive to boost the national economy through export growth has never been stronger.  Both the Department for International Trade (DIT) and Welsh Government are offering comprehensive support, training and trade missions/events.  The British Chambers of Commerce and other key business organisations, from both the public and private sector, are all providing an extensive range of support and services to help businesses to develop their export capabilities and venture into new markets.

Here at the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber we thought now was a good time to be a little more inward looking at some of the fundamental issues which can impact on the success of your international trade activity.

‘COMPLIANCE’ is a huge topic as it encompasses so many areas of international trade: from the products/services that you offer, to the way they are transported/registered/licenced and the supporting documentation required.  How could we fail to mention ‘CUSTOMS’ in the same breath? These are of major importance – and not just in terms of fulfilling the legal responsibilities of an exporter to satisfy HMRC (which we will be exploring with you).  Understanding and adhering to customs and culture in your target markets is also very important if you want to develop successful business opportunities.  What is more, effective ‘COMMUNICATION’ is essential – encompassing language, marketing messages and materials, negotiating skills and even body language.

Our next Forum will be an interactive event, facilitated by our very experienced trainers, Becky Stark (of Stark Export Focus) and Mark Rowbotham (of Portcullis).  Through a combination of presentation, discussion and audience participation, we will be focussing on the areas highlighted above and inviting you to share your concerns and experiences.

It is often said that our people are our greatest asset.  How well do you look after your staff working in international markets?  Our guest speaker is Nathan Monshin, Director of International Risk at SIRisk.  The company specialises in reducing risks associated with travel and security of individuals venturing overseas.  Nathan will be giving us a case study on cultural and compliance awareness affecting safety and security of individuals and companies overseas.  He will be explaining some of the risks that companies should be assessing and addressing about health and safety and duty of care for staff.  His extensive experience of some key international markets, including Rio 2016, will also mean he can offer some valuable contributions to the wider discussions at the Forum.

In addition to the above, the Chamber will be giving their valuable International Trade Team Bulletin and we even have a quiz with a bottle of bubbly for the winner!

If you are a business contemplating whether to start to export or are already working in export and looking to expand and break into new markets, please come along and meet a wealth of experts who will be more than happy to help you take your first steps into export or leap into new opportunities!

Registration starts at 12:00 noon in the Llyndir Suite and lunch from 12:15 until 13:00.  The meeting closes at 15:30 with informal networking afterwards until 16:30. The event is free of charge to Chamber members and £10.00 to non-members which includes lunch and refreshments.

We look forward to seeing you there!
